Dehumidifier Size Calculator

ENERGY STAR sizes a portable dehumidifier by two things: whether the space is under or over 2,000 sq ft, and how damp it is without a dehumidifier. Choose both below to see the recommended capacity range in pints per day. ENERGY STAR adds that it is better to oversize than undersize.

The official table

ENERGY STAR’s recommended capacity range for a portable dehumidifier, in pints per day:

Condition without dehumidificationSmall to medium room (under 2,000 sq ft)Large room (over 2,000 sq ft)
Slightly to moderately dampSpace feels damp and has a musty odor that may be intermittent; 50–75% relative humidity.20–3030+
Very dampSpace consistently feels and smells damp; damp spots appear on walls and floors; 75–90% relative humidity.25–4040+
WetWalls or floor sweat, or seepage is present; high-load conditions such as laundry drying may be present; 90–100% relative humidity.30–5050+

Capacities in the dataset follow the DOE test at 65°F used since June 2019, which reads lower than the old 80°F test, so do not compare against older ratings. For a whole-home unit, ENERGY STAR recommends professional sizing and installation.

How the result is worked out

The range comes straight from the chart above for your size and condition. The model list shows ENERGY STAR certified portable dehumidifiers whose listed capacity is at least the low end of that range, starting from the smallest qualifying capacity; those inside the range are marked. It is an ordering, not a recommendation.
