Levoit, Winix or Coway? Matching Each Brand to a Room

By iPickOne editorial team · Published · Reviewed

Short answer

By ENERGY STAR's numbers the three are built for different rooms: the Levoit Core 400S for about 358 sq ft, the Winix C610 for about 384 sq ft and the Coway Airmega 400 for about 583 sq ft. Choose by room first, then by features: the Levoit and Winix add Wi-Fi, the Coway has a sensor mode but no Wi-Fi. A brand cannot be judged on this data for noise, filter cost or durability, because ENERGY STAR does not report them.

All figures are from ENERGY STAR's certified room air cleaner data (queried 2026-11-06). Noise level, filter replacement cost and warranty are not in that data, so we leave them out rather than guess. Highlighted = best value in the row: highest CADR, IEF, CEER, run time or suction; lowest yearly energy use or weight. Sources for every figure are listed under “Sources” below.

How we compared: key criteria

  1. Room sizeENERGY STAR publishes a recommended room size for each certified model. Pick a model sized to the room: ENERGY STAR notes larger models use more energy, and its CADR chart is only an estimate.
  2. CADR, and what it measuresCADR (clean air delivery rate, in cfm) measures how quickly a unit delivers filtered air; ENERGY STAR lists it separately for smoke, dust and pollen, which are particles. A higher CADR serves a larger area. ENERGY STAR's CADR chart assumes an 8-foot ceiling, and it advises a higher CADR if your ceilings are higher.
  3. Energy per unit of roomThe Levoit Core 400S lists 237 kWh per year for 358 sq ft, the Winix C610 235 kWh for 384 sq ft and the Coway Airmega 400 366 kWh for 583 sq ft. The Winix is the lightest user per room-size in this trio; ENERGY STAR says a standard room air cleaner uses about 394 kWh per year.
  4. Features that differWi-Fi: Levoit and Winix yes, Coway no. Automatic mode: all three list an air-quality sensor. Ozone emissions: 0 ppb for the Levoit Core 400S and the Coway, 1 ppb for the Winix C610 in ENERGY STAR's data.
  5. What is not comparedNoise, filter cost, warranty and build quality are not in the ENERGY STAR data. We do not rank the brands on them.

Our picks

Pick Levoit if…

Levoit Core 400S air purifier

  • 358sq ft
  • 231CADR
  • 237kWh/yr

Why we'd pick it: you have a room of roughly 360 sq ft and want Wi-Fi and a sensor mode: CADR 231 / 240 / 259 cfm, 237 kWh per year, 0 ppb ozone emissions.

Skip it if… your room is above about 360 sq ft; ENERGY STAR also lists a 363 sq ft Levoit row, so confirm the code on the box.

Pick Winix if…

Winix C610 air purifier

  • 384sq ft
  • 248CADR
  • 235kWh/yr

Skip it if… you want a single purifier without a bundle: the Amazon listing includes two years of filters, so what you pay includes them.

  • 583sq ft
  • 376CADR

Downsides and when not to buy

  • The data compares only room size, CADR, energy and a few features. It does not tell you which is quietest or cheapest to run.
  • The three are rated for different rooms, so comparing CADR across them says more about size than about quality.
  • Filter type labels are ENERGY STAR's program labels (“HEPA-Type”, “Composite Filter”), not independent filter tests.

When the pricier option isn't worth it

The Coway's larger room rating is not worth its higher energy use if your room is closer to 360 than 580 sq ft; ENERGY STAR notes larger models use more energy.

Who should skip this product type

Skip all three if you need odor or gas removal: the data here measures particles only.

Extra costs, installation and compatibility

Ongoing costs
Replacement filters are a recurring cost not shown here, and the Coway lists two filters. The Winix C610 on Amazon is a bundle that includes two years of filters.
Installation and space
Dimensions and weight are not in ENERGY STAR's data; check each manufacturer's page for fit.
Compatibility
All three are ENERGY STAR-listed for the US market. The Levoit and Winix need Wi-Fi for app control.

Research method, sources and review date

Research-based comparison: we compare manufacturer specifications, user manuals and published guidance, and note where a figure is a manufacturer claim. We do not test products in a lab. Figures come from ENERGY STAR's certified room air cleaner data (queried 2026-11-06); sizing guidance comes from ENERGY STAR. Amazon.com was checked only to confirm each model exists and to find its listing, not as a source of specifications. How we compare · Editorial policy
