Air Purifiers in a Pet Home: What the Data Can and Cannot Tell You

By iPickOne editorial team · Published · Reviewed

Short answer

ENERGY STAR's air purifier data cannot show how well a model handles pet hair or pet odor: its CADR numbers are for smoke, dust and pollen particles, and it lists no odor or gas rating. What it does give you for a pet home is room size, CADR, energy use and ozone emissions. Match the model to the room, and treat any pet claim on a box as the manufacturer's, not ours.

All figures are from ENERGY STAR's certified room air cleaner data (queried 2026-11-06). Noise level, filter replacement cost and warranty are not in that data, so we leave them out rather than guess. Highlighted = best value in the row: highest CADR, IEF, CEER, run time or suction; lowest yearly energy use or weight. Sources for every figure are listed under “Sources” below.

How we compared: key criteria

  1. What CADR does and does not sayENERGY STAR defines CADR as how quickly a unit delivers filtered air. Its three CADR numbers are for smoke, dust and pollen. There is no pet-hair or odor rating in the data, so a high CADR cannot prove a model handles either.
  2. Room sizeENERGY STAR publishes a recommended room size for each certified model. Pick a model sized to the room: ENERGY STAR notes larger models use more energy, and its CADR chart is only an estimate.
  3. Ozone emissionsSome purifiers add technologies besides a filter. ENERGY STAR lists the Winix T810 as “Fan and Filter, PlasmaWave” with 1.35 ppb ozone emissions, the Winix C610 at 1 ppb, and the Levoit Core 400S and Coway Airmega 400 at 0 ppb. If you want filter-only operation, look at the technology column.
  4. Filter typeThe Levoit and Winix C610 list “HEPA-Type”, the T810 “HEPA”, and the Coway “Composite Filter”. ENERGY STAR does not list whether any carbon layer is present, so check the manufacturer's page for an odor filter.
  5. Where you put itA purifier only treats the room it sits in, so size it to the room where the pet spends time, not the whole house.

Downsides and when not to buy

  • No source we used rates pet-hair pickup or pet odor removal; the manufacturer pages we did not read may make claims we have not checked.
  • ENERGY STAR's CADR is for smoke, dust and pollen, not pet dander or odor.
  • Noise and filter cost, which matter to pet households that run the unit all day, are not in the data.

When the pricier option isn't worth it

A PlasmaWave model is not worth choosing for a pet home on this data alone: ENERGY STAR shows only that it emits a small amount of ozone (1.35 ppb), not that it does more for pets.

Who should skip this product type

Skip a purifier as your main pet-odor fix; this data does not support it, and cleaning bedding and removing the source are outside what we measured. We make no allergy or health claim.

Extra costs, installation and compatibility

Ongoing costs
Filters are a recurring cost not shown here; a pet home may replace them sooner, but no source we read gives a schedule. The Winix C610 on Amazon is sold with two years of filters.
Installation and space
Place it in the room where the pet spends time, with open space around it; ENERGY STAR's data has no dimensions.
Compatibility
All four are ENERGY STAR-listed for the US. The Coway Airmega 400 has no Wi-Fi; the others do.

Frequently asked questions

Does a HEPA-Type filter remove pet hair?

The data here does not rate it. ENERGY STAR lists filter labels and CADR for smoke, dust and pollen; it has no pet-hair or odor figure.

Is the Winix T810 safe because it lists ozone emissions?

We make no safety claim. ENERGY STAR lists 1.35 ppb ozone emissions for the T810, 1 ppb for the C610 and 0 for the Levoit and Coway models.

Research method, sources and review date

Research-based comparison: we compare manufacturer specifications, user manuals and published guidance, and note where a figure is a manufacturer claim. We do not test products in a lab. Figures come from ENERGY STAR's certified room air cleaner data (queried 2026-11-06); sizing guidance comes from ENERGY STAR. Amazon.com was checked only to confirm each model exists and to find its listing, not as a source of specifications. How we compare · Editorial policy
